Role Summary:

Job title: Graduate Energy Trader

Location: Manchester city centre

Reporting to: Head of Operations

Working pattern: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week. The role is based in GLEG's Manchester office, with hybrid working available once initial training is complete. Core hours are Monday to Friday, 09:30 to 16:00.

This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially minded graduate who is interested in energy markets, trading, data analysis and financial risk. The successful candidate will support the management of flexible electricity and gas contracts for GLEG's clients, working closely with the Head of Operations, Account Managers and wider team.

The role combines detailed numerical analysis with clear client communication. Previous energy-trading experience is not required: structured training will be provided across wholesale markets, flexible supply contracts, trading strategies, risk management and GLEG's systems.

Duties:

Energy Markets & Trading:

  • Monitor UK and European wholesale electricity, gas, oil, carbon and wider commodity markets.
  • Identify the principal market, economic and geopolitical factors affecting energy prices.
  • Maintain accurate market-price data and forward-curve information.
  • Support the execution and recording of electricity and gas purchases under agreed client strategies and authorities.
  • Monitor open positions, hedge levels, purchasing limits and upcoming trading requirements.
  • Assist with peer-to-peer renewable energy, power purchase agreement and corporate PPA opportunities.
  • Maintain complete, accurate and auditable records of trading decisions, instructions and confirmations

Risk Management and Analysis:

  • Analyse client consumption forecasts, budgets, hedge positions and market exposure.
  • Support the development and implementation of risk-management strategies reflecting each client's objectives and risk tolerance.
  • Prepare analysis and recommendations covering the timing, volume and duration of energy purchases.
  • Monitor compliance with agreed trading parameters and escalate exceptions promptly to the Head of Operations.
  • Help prepare scenario analysis, budget forecasts, mark-to-market reporting and value-at-risk analysis.
  • Review the financial impact of market movements and changes in forecast consumption.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of GLEG's internal trading controls and governance processes.Client Reporting and Communication

Client Reporting & Communication:

  • Prepare concise market updates, position reports and client-specific trading recommendations.
  • Translate complex market information into clear and commercially relevant advice.
  • Contribute to monthly and quarterly client trading and risk-management meetings.
  • Support Account Managers with market analysis, procurement presentations and client queries.
  • Develop the confidence to present market updates and recommendations directly to clients.Maintain accurate data within GLEG's trading and reporting systems.

Data, Systems & Collaboration:

  • Maintain accurate data within GLEG's trading and reporting systems.
  • Use Excel, Power BI and GLEG's internal software to produce meaningful analysis.
  • Validate consumption, pricing, supplier position and transaction data for accuracy and completeness.
  • Work with GLEG's technology team to automate reporting and improve the client experience.
  • Work collaboratively with Operations, Account Management, Finance, Sustainability and Business Development.

Skills:

Essential:

  • A degree in economics, finance, mathematics, business, engineering, energy, environmental science or another relevant analytical subject.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills, with good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • A genuine interest in energy markets, commodities, economics or financial markets.
  • The ability to interpret data and identify commercially important trends.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and a disciplined approach to record keeping.
  • The confidence to ask questions, challenge information constructively and take ownership of actions.
  • The ability to manage deadlines and work effectively in a fast-moving environment..

Desirable:

  • Previous work experience or academic exposure relating to energy, commodities, trading, procurement or risk.
  • Experience using Power BI or another data-visualisation tool.
  • Knowledge of UK electricity and gas markets or flexible energy contracts.
  • Experience presenting analysis or recommendations to others.

Training and Career Development:

GLEG will provide structured development covering wholesale energy markets, electricity and gas contract structures, flexible procurement, trading strategies, budget forecasting, position management, risk controls, renewable energy purchasing, client communication and GLEG's technology. As capability develops, there will be opportunities to progress into an Energy Trader or Energy Trading and Risk Analyst role and take ownership of an allocated client portfolio.
