How to Break Into ETRM: A Career Guide for 2026 (When Only 3.7% of Jobs Are Junior)
Learn ETRM
Jobs & market data
Here's the uncomfortable truth about breaking into Energy Trading and Risk Management: out of 617 active job listings we track on the LearnETRM Jobs Board, only 23 are aimed at junior professionals. That's 3.7%. The rest demand mid-level or senior experience.
So how do you actually get in?
Understand What Employers Are Really Hiring For
The biggest misconception is that ETRM is about trading. It's not — at least not for most roles. Operations positions (trade capture, scheduling, settlement, reconciliation) account for 42% of all listings. Business Analyst roles make up 24%. Developer roles represent 22%. Actual trading desk positions are just 4% of the market.
If you're trying to enter the field, operations and business analysis are your most realistic entry points. These roles value process knowledge and attention to detail over years of platform experience.
Pick a Platform Early
Endur (OpenLink) appears in 181 of 617 listings — nearly 30% of all ETRM jobs globally. Allegro follows at 66 listings and RightAngle at 47. Platform specialisation is the single fastest way to differentiate yourself from generalist candidates.
Learning Endur gives you the widest job market. Learning Allegro positions you for North American midstream. RightAngle points toward downstream and refined products.
Build Domain Knowledge Before Platform Skills
Here's what hiring managers actually care about: can you explain the difference between day-ahead and real-time power markets? Do you understand physical vs. financial settlement? Can you walk through a gas nomination workflow?
Platform skills get you shortlisted. Domain knowledge gets you hired. The candidates who understand trade lifecycle concepts — deal capture, position management, mark-to-market, credit exposure, regulatory reporting — stand out regardless of which system they've used.
Target the Right Geographies
London (151 listings) and Houston (137 listings) together account for nearly half of all ETRM jobs worldwide. India has 50+ listings and is growing fast as a nearshore consulting hub. Germany's 40+ listings reflect the European energy transition. Singapore is the gateway to Asia-Pacific energy markets.
If you're flexible on location, your odds improve dramatically.
The Practical Path In
Most successful ETRM professionals entered through one of three doors: a graduate programme at an energy major, a consulting firm that staffs ETRM implementations (Wipro, Accenture, capSpire, Infosys), or a lateral move from a related role in commodities operations, finance, or IT support at a trading firm.
The structured training route is increasingly viable too. Programmes that combine trade lifecycle fundamentals with hands-on platform exposure can compress what used to take 2-3 years of on-the-job learning into a few months of focused study.
The junior talent shortage isn't going away. If anything, it's getting worse as senior professionals retire and ETRM systems become more complex. The window for entry is wide open — if you have the right preparation.
